‘Waterfall’ from the Nocturnal Flowers (July 18, 2007)

For the last few weeks I’ve been listening to ‘Waterfall’ the latest offering from The Nocturnal Flowers. These guys have delivered yet another hauntingly beautiful composition. On first listen it’s a simple song, superbly sung. Perhaps it’s even a love song or maybe it’s a song about love. The Nocturnal Flowers put so much obvious love Nocturnal Flowersand care into their songs it’s hard to tell. Whatever the case, you’re going to fall in love with Darren Oakshott’s thoughtful and precise guitar work, Paul Marshall’s sensitive percussion (a delicate touch no doubt envied by other percussionists) and Jennie Beastie’s memorable voice, lingering harmonies and delicate violin. Listen to ‘Waterfall’ again and again as it leads you into the depths of their perceptive lyrics and exquisite vocals. The Nocturnal Flowers deserve exposure way beyond the bounds of their native Hull – the rest of the UK has no idea what it’s missing.
