‘Stories’ – Wolves and Ravens (August 02, 2007)
'Stories' - a great song from Wolves and Ravens

For the last hour I’ve had the CD player on ‘track repeat’ and it’s still not enough. And what’s the subject of this repetitive musical gluttony? Another fine song from the CD ‘Origin of a Species’ from Wolves & Ravens, those excellent purveyors of funky folk-rock, laced with jazzy blues. This time Tim Gadban has cooked up a dish for your ears with faultless style and even blended in an introduction from the legendary blind, itinerant Irish harper, composer and singer, Turlough O’ Carolan.

‘Stories’ is an emotive song that must become an American folk classic – if it doesn’t there’s no justice on this earth. If this song receives the airplay and coverage it deserves you can tell your grandchildren that you remember the birth of something great. The lyrics wrap their message around the song’s themes in a way that is pure joy. There are so many piercing lines it’s hard to select a favourite but my ears have fallen in love with: “Then like history’s whores we fought two worldly wars.”

Tim Gadban’s guitar laced with Pete Rivard’s accordion carry the force of the tune, supported as usual by Terry Lee Storhaug on percussion and Chuck Campbell on bass. On this track though Carrie Rivard joins the band on flute and that’s the ingredient that makes this track something outstanding. Guys you have to get that lady on to more tracks.
