Silverwheel - tradition with imagination (September 01, 2007)

Silverwheel – bill themselves as offering ‘traditional folk with a rock attitude and glam look’ – that may be, but for my money they play damn fine folk music, irrespective of how they dress. They execute a great version of ‘Copshawholme Fair’ and immediately you could make a Jefferson Airplane comparison - slightly unfair though - Grace Slick could never sing English folk with the same power as Sue Cain.

Silverwheel is Sue Cain (vocals, mandolin and bass) Anna Grant (fiddle and vocals), Chris McMahon (guitar, bouzouki, bass, accordion and vocals), Peter Rophone (bass, guitar and vocals) and French Freddie - who’s just left them (drums) – Paul McMahon is standing in right now. They also state that they play ‘modern interpretations of folk tunes in venues and to audiences that would not normally welcome folk music’. Listen to these guys and a whole host of folk-snob venues and folk-mocking audiences will know what they’ve been missing.

They deliver other fine versions of traditional songs with an innovative edge, ‘Cold Haily Windy Night’ is somewhat rock-influenced, and another great vehicle for their talents. ‘Black is the Colour’ is a mournful song sensitively executed – beautiful fiddle. The harmonies on any rendition of ‘Ye Jacobites by Name’ have to be good – no problem here, Silverwheel deliver a better version than many.

Finally, they say they hope to record more material later in the year – well get on with it guys! You’ve got something there and it’s a damn shame to keep it to yourselves.
