Another key is cut to fit the lock of English folk tradition and what it unlocks is a treasure trove worth searching for and listening to. I’m talking about Faustus – three guys who’ve already stamped their mark on English folk music. Now, together they have found something well worth developing.
Ask for comment and you’re bound to get it – that’s what Faustus did with their latest rough cuts - so here you go chaps.
Fautus state that these latest tunes are ‘three rough mix tracks from our album’. I’d argue it’s more accurate to state that these songs are time-honoured storytelling folk songs performed with precision – never mind about the mix. Fiddle, melodeon, bouzouki, oboe, spot on vocals and harmonies all combine to produce timeless songs that will become the envy of many folk musicians. ‘Ballina Whalers’ is a well-crafted classic whaling song - love the edgy fiddle, ‘Acre of Land’ grabs you from the first, and ‘Hostess’s Daughter’ is a finely-delivered treat.
Faustus is Saul Rose (melodeon and vocals), Paul Sartin (oboe, fiddle and vocals) and Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar, bouzouki and vocals). These exceptional musicians produce traditional songs that reach deep into the soul to wake those long lost memories many didn’t know were there - memories created by generations of fine folk musicians.
Faustus - future classics of the English folk tradition indeed. I can’t wait to hear the album.
