Telling the Bees - hauntingly beautiful music (September 17, 2007) Telling the Bees is more than whispering to the hives; this is a band that conjures hauntingly beautiful music - simple as that. The lyrics are pure poetry gliding over an intrigue of subtle impressive music that calls you to listen.
The minute they start to play all sorts of memories fly around, depending of course on how old you are. To these old ears there’s something of The Incredible String Band, Dr Strangely Strange and Gong in their music. Even so, that implies no negatives, there’s clear originality here. Telling the Bees has lifted all those comparisons to another plane and carved out their own style.
There are two rough mixes out ahead of the promised EP in October with an album to follow in time for Christmas. ‘Wood’ is a peaceful song created with all the texture and depth of its subject - you can almost feel the grain running through the composition. As the tune rises and falls the band crafts ‘Wood’ into shape with lyrics that tell the various artisans’ stories. ‘Beautiful’ is just that. It is a mantra to teach people how beautiful they are. No matter how you feel at the start of this song, ‘Beautiful’ will have you convinced that inner beauty is there to touch and see long before you reach the end.
Telling the Bees is songwriter, Andy Letcher (mandolin, mandolute, pipes, vocals), Josie Webber (cello, vocals), Jane Griffiths (fiddle, vocals) and Colin Fletcher (bass).
Take some time to listen to what the bees are saying. There is bound to be a queue for the album and I’ll be at the front of it.
