A rich blend of ‘acousticity’ from Acoustica (March 04, 2008) Acoustica describes exactly what you get. Their latest
album ‘The Oban Sessions’ (a follow up to Welcome to…) is a rich
blend of ‘acousticity’ that includes a folk roots edge, a dash of blues, a
smattering of country and a touch of acoustic rock. On this album Acoustica,
who are Andy Higgins (guitar/voice/tiple) and Catherine Higgins (violin, voice,
guitar) mix self-penned songs with selected covers, combine subtle strings and soft
harmonies to produce a fine album.
The opening track Hometown Blues (Steve Earle) has a
bluesy-country feel that skilfully morphs into a gentle folky version of I’m
Looking Through You (Lennon/McCartney) – Catherine’s voice is spot on with
this one. Their instrumental version of Heartbreak Hotel combined with
Cliffs of Moher is another gem – incisive edgy violin mixed with stylish
guitar – Elvis should have used this version.
Steal the Time Away and Another Day
are
‘A& C Higgins’ songs (more Acoustica songs on the next album and
let’s see the lyrics please). There’s depth and understanding in these
songs to touch anyone who listens. Catherine’s voice has a longing
mournful
edge and Andy’s skill on the strings is an indulgence for your ears. Captains
is a great, often copied, Steve Knightley song, and Acoustica deliver
the best cover version I‘ve
heard in a while. This is the second album I’ve heard within as many
months with a Neil Young song, which is always brave. It’s hard for
anyone else to sing his songs, they need
his nasal tenor. This version of Don’t Let It Bring You Down is fine,
but it misses Young’s strident voice – I would love to hear Catherine sing lead on
this.
Back to Acoustica compositions, and they offer Left Behind, a searching song
about pain and lost love (please print those lyrics guys) - sensitive guitar, beautiful words and
splendid harmonies. Acoustica close the album with Carry Me - just a gorgeous song.
Acoustica craft their music with care and a fine
touch that makes listening just one pleasure after another, this is an album
that gets better the more you listen. And I’m off to listen to some more.
