Album Reviews Gently extrovert acoustic folk-pop (September 23, 2009) Lucy Day sent a CD called ‘A
Handful of Pennies’ containing four songs and asked for an opinion. Here
it is.
Lucy Day writes and plays gently extrovert acoustic folk-pop. On
occasion she uses somewhat tangled lyrics to make the point, while the
wandering imagery and changing metre can take some getting used to. That is of
course much of the charm. Some will find an odd scan between lyrics and music –
although that works well with her delivery of these gentle yet quirky songs.
The music has some unusual though not unpleasant sound mixes going on but there
remains an engaging quality that’s hard to ignore – matching its idiosyncrasies
with her style and delivery.
So what of the tracks? ‘A Fire in the Sea’ introduces and taps
incessantly in your ear with its collection of sounds chattering away behind
Lucy’s expressive vocals, ‘A Handful of Pennies’ follows a similar vein. With ‘A
Trick of the Light’ she expands the theme with perhaps the multi-track vocals
just too strong. ‘Something for Later’ is the most complete and memorable song
with a bouncy mandolin and punchy harmonica.
Somewhere in the accompanying paperwork was a reference to
Joni Mitchell – not sure about that. Lucy’s voice is far easier on the ear,
although the poignant poetic wanderings on this CD could recall an early Joni-esque
overtone – perhaps. There’s something interesting going on here, which with
care could develop into something really good.
