'Dreams Will Come' - raw, hard-hitting, untainted. (December 11, 2009) ‘Dreams Will Come’ the latest album from Ohio-based singer-songwriter Phillip Fox, recorded during a tour of house concerts from Midwest to South-west America is as close to the feel of a neighbourhood concert as you could get without being there. (According to the sleeve notes: ‘recorded in living rooms with a few mics scattered around’). It's a blend of American folk, rock, bluegrass and country that once heard will remain with you for a long time.
‘Livin’ from the Heart’ uses precise percussion to drive home the achingly accurate imaginative lyrics as they resonate across the ‘generation gap’. In ‘Safe with You’ banjo and cajon combine with vocals to chase through the message. ‘Comfortable but Bored’ is an instantly catchy tune with more candid lyrics, while the power and depth of both ‘Come Close to Me’ and ‘She’ take emotions somewhere different as they deliver their potent messages. The mix also includes the wisdom of ‘What Cancer Cannot Do’ - a brave song that treats the crushing fears of cancer with clarity and honesty creating a uniquely positive view. The eponymous ‘Dreams Will Come’ is another powerhouse of melody and vocals, while ‘Forgiven’ is an intense observation on life with a razor-sharp perspective on the effect we have on other people. This album offers twelve carefully crafted songs that hit the spot on so many levels. It’s raw, hard-hitting, untainted and it’s great - not a weak link anywhere. Phillip handles all vocals, plays guitar and harmonica; joining him are Nathan Lundquist (guitar, backing vocals, mandolin, banjo, acoustic bass) Melissa Fox (piano, shaker, backing vocals) and Whitney Lundquist (cajon, djembe, shaker, backing vocals).
