... a 'groundbreaking' project comes to life

Posted on 2:28pm Tuesday 7th Feb 2012

It’s not often there’s a project in the folk world that one can accurately describe as ‘groundbreaking. Adding that word to a project usually means that the project is so bizarre that it will only interest a tiny percentage of the population. The other use of the word is to brand the project as incomprehensible. This time it’s usually employed to avoid reviewers resorting to: “I have no idea what it’s about.”

Well when you apply the word ‘groundbreaking’ to the ‘London ReBorn’ project - the brainchild of musician and composer Simon McKechnie – it is entirely correct. This project will become a milestone in English folk. It sits comfortably in the folk genre but also breaks out into other worlds. It takes folk music to unexpected places. It exudes interest and fascination.

We wanted to get under the skin of this ambitious and (if there is any justice) ultimately highly successful project, so FolkWords took the opportunity to talk to Simon. We asked him about the project, its genesis and how he mixed ancient tunes and instruments with modern treatments and synthesised sounds to create 'London ReBorn'.
