‘Before We Change Our Mind’ by Beoga - deserves to gain the widest possible praise(June 07, 2016)
Beoga have established themselves as both custodians of their slice of the Irish tradition and recognised innovators that remain unafraid to incorporate a rich variety of influences into the fabric of their music. Along the way, Beoga have created a sound that although based in their deep rooted heritage, expands and develops with every album. Within the latest studio offering of their 13-year career, ‘Before We Change Our Mind’ their sound has matured and if anything, become tighter and more than ever a truly integrated whole without a seam in sight.
The uniqueness of their sound comes primarily from the twin button accordions of Damian McKee and Seán Óg Graham, pianist Liam Bradley, the bodhrán of Eamon Murray plus the fiddle and stunning vocals of Niamh Dunne. This combination is equally ‘at home’ delivering iridescent original instrumental sets, reworking tradition and selecting from the anthologies of ‘folk masters’. ‘Before We Change Our Mind’ contains classic Beoga touches ... ‘The Homestead Hero’, ‘The Convict’ and ‘Before We Change Our Mind’; the entrancing pull of tracks like ‘Eochiad and ‘Aurora’ and superbly delivered songs ‘The Bonny Ship, The Diamond’ and ‘Wexford Town’ ... all in all this is an album that deserves to gain the widest possible praise.
