‘So Far’ by Emily Snee “…revealing frankness, fearlessness and sincerity”

Writing this website offers the chance to hear startling new music, sometimes from an unknown artist and often long So Far - Emily Sneebefore an EP or album hits the streets. This time the artist in question is Emily Snee, who plays inspired acoustic folk, and if the stars align as they should and the fates keep their sensible heads on, she will gain considerable recognition with her album ‘So Far’ – an appreciation that would be well-deserved.

There’s a certain style to her songs and spoken word - three of tracks on the album are revealing mood-soaked orations - that hold you and demand your attention. Throughout, ‘So Far’ reveals a combination of frankness, fearlessness and sincerity. The songs offer a simple yet perfectly-fitting guitar style and subtly-crafted narrative lyrics delivered through richly textured vocals – the opener sets expectations with ‘Away’ before the tenderness of ‘If You Go’ fulfils the promise with its attractive melody and wholly memorable reach. Emily possess a voice that remains the overriding impression this album leaves behind – rich, feeling-filled, striking vocals – listen to ‘People and Places’ to understand.

Then there’s the spoken soliloquies - intense and revealing, standing alone or delivered as prologues to songs. Within the naked honesty of the vocalised ‘Absense’there’s a piercing openness that bleeds into the aching uncovering of a hard hitting song ‘In My Bones’. A similar veracity runs through the narratives of ‘Violin’ and the piano-backed ‘Hearing Letters’ each with their open disclosure of confusion and sorrow. Emily sets out so much through these words it’s offering the voyeuristic intimacy of listening-in to a phone call or tuning-in to the private thoughts of a letter writer.
