There’s something supremely calming about ‘A Chattering of Birds’ from Paul Mosley - perhaps it’s the chilled vocals, the gently intoxicating melodies or maybe it’s the engrossing stories - however those ingredients work their alchemy, they work it well. The essential themes integrate the messages in bird calls into the characterisation and meaning of these songs. Using an intricately woven web of ethereal folk-jazz-psych settings Paul incorporates a plethora of expressive instrumentation and haunting sounds to lead you towards magical soundscapes.
The scene sets immediately with the subtle opening ‘A Chattering of Birds’ blending strings, brass and keys to forge its message, beyond that lies the potent presence of ‘King of Birds’ and the darkly ominous sensations of ‘The Beast’. There’s also the smoothly languid tale of ‘Skylark Above Me’ that wraps its story and bewitching melody around your ears, while the pulsing, percussion-intense and enigmatic ‘Let’s See What This Baby Can Do’ comes complete with edgy lyrics and evocative backing vocals.
